Your website doesn’t need to be brand new to work for your business. But it does need to feel like your business today.

Maybe you built your website years ago when you were first getting started. Maybe you DIY’d it in a weekend and promised yourself you’d come back to it later. Or maybe your business has grown, changed and gotten a whole lot better…while your website stayed exactly the same.

If you’ve been wondering whether it’s time for a website refresh, here are 10 pretty good signs the answer might be yes.

(1) You’re a Little Embarrassed to Send People to It

This is a big one.

Someone asks for your website and instead of proudly sending the link, you immediately start explaining it.

“It’s a little outdated…”
“I haven’t updated it in forever…”
“Ignore the homepage…”

Your website should be something you’re excited to send people to, not something that needs a disclaimer first.

(2) Your Business Has Changed but Your Website Hasn’t

Businesses evolve. Your services change, your ideal clients shift, your pricing changes and you get clearer on what you actually want to be known for.

If your website is still talking to the business you had three years ago instead of the business you have today, it’s probably time for an update.

Your website should grow right along with you.

(3) Your Branding Feels Outdated

Maybe you’ve updated your logo, changed your colors, invested in new brand photos or simply figured out what your style actually is.

But your website? Still hanging onto the old version.

Your website is one of the biggest pieces of your brand, so it should feel consistent with everything else your customers see from you.

(4) It Doesn’t Look Great on Mobile

Pull up your website on your phone right now.

Is the text easy to read? Are the buttons easy to click? Do the photos fit correctly? Can someone quickly figure out what you do?

If you’re pinching, zooming or scrolling sideways, we have a problem.

Your website needs to look just as good and be just as easy to use on a phone as it does on your computer.

(5) Visitors Can’t Quickly Tell What You Do

Someone should be able to land on your homepage and understand pretty quickly:

What do you do?
Who do you do it for?
And where should they go next?

You know your business inside and out, so it’s easy to forget that a brand-new visitor doesn’t.

If your homepage is filled with vague wording, too much information or no clear direction, simplifying your website can make a huge difference.

(6) Your Photos Are From Another Era

You know the ones.

The headshot from five years ago. The blurry iPhone photo. The stock image you picked because you needed something to fill the space.

Strong photos can completely change the way a website feels. If you’ve invested in new brand photography or simply have better images of your work now your website should show them off.

Sometimes a photo refresh alone can make a website feel brand new.

(7) You’ve Outgrown Your DIY Website

There is absolutely nothing wrong with DIYing your first website. In fact, sometimes that’s exactly what you need to do to get your business off the ground.

But eventually, your business may outgrow it.

Maybe you have more services now. Maybe you’re attracting bigger clients. Maybe you’re charging more. Or maybe your website just doesn’t feel like it represents the level of work you’re doing anymore.

That’s usually a pretty good sign it’s time for the website to catch up.

(8) Making Updates Is a Nightmare

If changing one photo turns into a two-hour ordeal, something isn’t working.

You shouldn’t be afraid to touch your own website.

A good website should make it easy to update your photos, change your copy, add a new service or make small adjustments as your business grows without worrying that one click is going to mess up the entire thing.

(9) People Are Visiting…but They Aren’t Taking the Next Step

Your website can be beautiful and still not be doing its job.

Every page should give visitors a clear next step, whether that’s contacting you, booking a service, shopping a product, joining your email list or learning more.

If people are landing on your website but you’re not getting the inquiries or conversions you’d expect, it may be time to look beyond how your site looks and think about how it actually works.

(10) It Just Doesn’t Feel Like You Anymore

Sometimes you can’t point to one specific thing that’s wrong.

You just know your website isn’t it anymore.

And that counts.

You’ve probably grown a lot since you first created it. Your style is different. Your business is different. You know your customers better. You know yourself better.

Your website should feel like the business you’ve built not the business you used to have.

So…Is It Time for a Refresh?

If you were nodding along to more than a few of these, it might be time.

And a website refresh doesn’t always mean starting completely from scratch. Sometimes new photos, better copy, updated branding and a more intentional layout are all you need to make your website feel completely different.

And if your current site is really ready for retirement? I can help with that too.
